‘A tribute to mother tongue’ - தமிழ்

தமிழ் இன்பத் தமிழ்எங்கள் உயிருக்கு நேர்

                       Tamil, an ancient language has many fascinating features. Here we present one such mathematical beauty of our mother tongue. The number of alphabets in Tamil counts up to 247. Normally we remember 247 with a pattern “உயிரும் மெய்யும் உயிர்மெய்யும் ஆயுதமும்”.

                      Now mathematically if a denotes the number of vowels(உயிர்) and b denotes the number of consonants(மெய்), then 247 = a + b+ ab+1, where a =12 and b=18. It is mesmerizing that both 12 and 18 lies between two consecutive twin primes (11,13) and (17,19) respectively. Most sacred numbers in India lie between twin primes. For example, 6, 12,18, 108, ….

                     Coming back to 247, we can notice a magical behaviour. 247 can be uniquely expressed in the above said pattern with a =12 and b=18, for a, b >0. Meanwhile consider any other numbers like,

                            24 = 3+5 + (3*5) +1

                                  = 2+7 + (2*7) +1 = 1+ 11+ (1*11) +1

                           32 = 3+7 + (3*7) +1 = 1+ 15+(1*15)+1

                     But 247 could be written in this pattern with positive numbers in a unique way, 247= 12+18+ (12*18) +1. This property adds one more feather to the crown of amazing features of our mother tongue.
